Waste management that works.

We help investors fund waste systems that keep thriving long after the funding ends. Built by regional experts. Owned by local communities.

Why waste projects struggle

You’ve seen it before: millions invested, great launch event, then silence. The system breaks down, the community loses interest, and you’re back to square one.

The problem? Projects often can’t continue when external support ends because communities weren’t involved in designing them.

We do the opposite. Regional waste experts design it. Communities own it. And it keeps working long after we’re gone.

What we help you do

Stop wasting money – Build systems that communities actually want and can afford to run.

Create lasting change – Design solutions that get stronger over time, not weaker.

Scale the right way – Communities teach each other, so impact spreads naturally without endless funding.

What success looks like

Two years later, the waste system you funded is being replicated in three neighbouring communities. It’s profitable, expanding, and solving new problems without any outside help.

That’s the difference between projects that extract value and systems that create it.

How we work:   Seed $ System $ Scale

We start by listening. Women sorting plastic on a riverbank, waste-pickers who already know every back alley, municipal staff stretching tiny budgets. They show us what already works and where change is welcome.

From there we follow our Seed → System → Scale path:

Seed

Listen & Learn: Find out what people actually need (not what we think they need). Then co-design a small pilot that turns waste streams into real income for community members.

System

Design & Build: Create a simple system that communities can run with their own skills and money. No fancy tech they can’t fix. No processes that stop working when we leave.

Scale

Connect & Grow: Train successful communities to teach others. Connect waste entrepreneurs across regions. Build finance models that communities control.

The result

Community-owned circular systems that generate income, create jobs, and solve problems – all run by regional experts who know what they’re doing.

A waste system that keeps working long after the project ends.

Why Global Waste Lab?

Embedded expertise. Every project is led by waste experts from the region who speak the language, understand the culture, and stick around long-term.

Global connections. We have built a network of 10,000+ waste managers across Africa, Asia and Latin America. They know what works in real conditions.

Just transition focus. We support communities to build sustainable income from waste, rather than extracting value from them.

What you gain

Value for money – Systems that communities can afford to run, so your investment keeps working.

Real longevity – Built by regional experts, owned by communities, sustained by people who live there.

Impact that scales – Communities teaching communities means your investment multiplies naturally.

Bottom line: No more project graveyards. Just circular systems that create lasting prosperity.

Is your project set up to succeed?

Use the Resilience Scorecard to explore whether your project is built to last:

  • Are you building with the community or for them?
  • Will your system work when the funding stops?
  • Can regional experts realistically run this day-to-day?

Receive a rapid, structured assessment of your project’s sustainability.

We look forward to listening!

The framework behind the Resilience Scorecard

The Resilience Scorecard is based on the Seven Foundations for Waste Management Project Resilience – a diagnostic framework developed by Global Waste Lab and informed by the UNEP Global Waste Management Outlook 2024.

The full framework is set out in the Seven Foundations Self-Assessment Guide, which explains the rationale, assessment questions, and score interpretation behind each foundation.
