Dr. Gemechu is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Kitakyushu in Japan. He received his PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Osaka in 2023 and has a background in environmental and public health.
His research integrates life-cycle thinking with data-driven policy scenario analysis to address solid waste management challenges in resource-constrained settings.
His work aims to generate evidence that supports informed decision-making in contexts with limited data availability and low policy attention to waste – particularly in rapidly urbanizing regions of the Global South.
“I find that the Global Waste Lab Academy aligns closely with my professional aspirations and provides an ideal platform to share knowledge and engage waste managers and practitioners in the Global South. Building on my research expertise and practical experience in environmental and public health in low-income contexts, I aim to offer grounded insights into the interplay between waste and health.
“Through the Waste and Health course, I hope learners will gain a clear understanding of key considerations for health risk reduction in waste work and develop the capacity to ensure that day-to-day waste management work do not expose workers and communities to serious health risks.”
